What is family therapy, and what can it help with?

Family therapy, also known as family counseling, is a branch of psychotherapy that focuses on improving communication and resolving conflicts within family relationships. It aims to help family members understand and cope with each other’s perspectives, emotions, and behaviors in order to create a healthier and more functional family dynamic.

Communication Issues

Effective communication is the cornerstone of healthy relationships. In family therapy, we address communication breakdowns, teach active listening skills, and facilitate open dialogue to help your family reach understanding and connection.

Whether you’re struggling with co-parenting after divorce, navigating the challenges of raising teenagers, or planning to start or expand your family soon, family therapy can provide support, guidance, and tools to strengthen your parenting skills and create a peaceful and loving family environment.

Resentment can poison family relationships and get in the way of emotional intimacy. Through family therapy, we explore the underlying causes of resentment, promote responsibility, forgiveness, and empathy, and help family members release negative emotions about mistakes that may have been made.

Conflict is inevitable in any relationship – it’s how we manage and resolve it that matters. In family therapy, we teach conflict resolution skills, facilitate productive discussions among family members who are in conflict, and help families find mutually acceptable solutions (compromise) to their differences.

Families can experience trauma collectively or individually; either way, trauma significantly affects all relationships. Family therapy provides a safe space to process trauma, rebuild trust, and strengthen bonds within the family after a traumatic event.

Addiction can wreak havoc on families and lead to broken trust, communication breakdowns, and severe emotional pain. As your family therapist, we will address the impact of addiction on family dynamics, promote healthy boundaries, and allow a safe place for expression to support both the individual and the family unit.

How does family therapy work at PBTC?

At Palm Beach Therapy Center, we use a strengths-based approach to family therapy. We see, even when you cannot, that your family has many unique strengths and resources. We work with you and every member of the family to identify those strengths – everything that you love or once loved about your family – and work toward restoring them.

As systemic therapists, we view families as complex systems (kind of like a “machine”); changes in one part of the system can impact the greater whole. This perspective helps us understand how family members interact and how patterns of behavior within the family are maintained.

With this in mind, we focus greatly on improving communication and teaching members of the family unit useful strategies to express emotions effectively and welcome understanding. We also focus on problem-solving and letting go of past hurts or resentments. We often work with families to identify and address specific issues or conflicts that are causing distress or dysfunction.
